Karen Heywood |
| Biography |
After leaving school, Karen attended Stockport College of Art where she won two local competitions for designing programme covers, and received her first commission designing and illustrating a school wall chart. At Leicester College of Art, where she studied for her Dip AD, Karen was awarded a Bursary award by the Royal Societyof Arts as a result of winning a national competition.
Her career as an artist has involved illustrating books for publishers such as Penguin, Hamish Hamilton and Collins. She has also animated on Dangermouse, Duckula and the BFG for Cosgrove Hall Films. Other work has included teaching illustration and design at Salford College of Art, and painting a children's mural at Bolton General Hospital. From 2000, Karen spent six years as an Art Therapist, working with cancer patients (Christie Hospital and Beechwood Cancer Care Centre), children in care and community groups. It was during this time that she became inspired to develop her own creativity and consequently decided to rent a studio at Vernon Mill. Although her illustration background is often apparent when looking at her paintings, Karen's main interest lies in exploring the realms of her imagination, i.e. emotions, dreams, symbolism and fantasy.
Sources of inspiration arise from daily walks in the High Peak, life drawing, as well as the works of such artists as Carlo, the Pre-Raphaelites, and Alan Lee. Karen's work has been exhibited in centres such as Stockport Art Gallery, Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, Glossop Heritage Centre, Broadstone Mill and Vernon Mill. |

Karl de Vroomen |
| Biography |
Karl de Vroomen’s paintings invoke unresolved narratives and an atmosphere of mystery. Familiar or banal scenes are underscored by a sense of disquiet or déjà vu that lends the apparently insignificant with an air of threat. His practice is frequently inspired by man’s interventions within the natural world and these unsettling images simultaneously convey anxiety, hope and the artist’s love of paint.
De Vroomen received a distinction from the Newcastle University MFA in 2009 and has exhibited at various venues throughout the UK. |

Katriona Beales |
| Biography |
Katriona Beales is a visual artist interested in the dialogue created by the spaces in between disciplines. Hence her work includes collage, installation, sculpture, assemblage and sometimes all of the above combined.
Much of Katriona's work has a wider social conscience and is concerned with exploring society’s patterns, repetitions and anomalies. Recurring lines of enquiry include: exploring inter-national and cross-cultural relationships; identity and whether or not it is dependent on geographical specificity; how super-modernity is shaping not only our experience but also our epistemology; and enjoying histories embedded in spaces and objects.
Living in Liverpool, UK, since 2001, Katriona is now based in the Bluecoat. She is a member of Axis, the online index of contemporary artists in the UK.
