Heart & Sold Makes Its Debut at the Buy Art Fair, Manchester, 27-29 October02 October 2017 Heart & Sold
The artwork displayed by Heart & Sold at the Buy Art Fair is everything visitors would expect from some of the country’s finest contemporary artists – stunningly creative and artistically brilliant. What they wouldn’t perhaps expect to find is that each piece has been created by an artist who happens to have Down Syndrome.
Representing more than 30 talented painters, illustrators and photographers worldwide, Heart & Sold is a pioneering arts initiative that promotes and supports artists with Down Syndrome and provides a platform from which to sell their work.
Heart & Sold founder and director Suzie Moffat explains: “Our aim has always been that the work of our artists should stand on its own merits – it is the power and creativity behind the piece that makes it special not the fact that the person who produced it has an extra chromosome.
“Heart & Sold was created simply to support these artists and help level the playing field a little in terms of getting their incredible work out there. We hope to educate, inspire and raise awareness, but most importantly prove that these individuals can do or be whatever they want to be.”
Heart & Sold will be selling prints from all 33 of its artists at the Buy Art Fair meaning that there’s something to appeal to all tastes – whether its stunning fine art, cheeky illustrations or evocative photography. Highlights include:-
Aurora Freeze, by Anthony Childs, £80 for a Giclee limited edition print of original acrylic abstract
A stunning and atmospheric piece from celebrated Californian artist Anthony Childs, who is very much inspired by nature.
The Common Room, by Fiona Stevenson, £85 for a Giclee limited edition print from original oil painting on canvas
British artist Fiona Stevenson is developing a reputation for her colourful and abstract works, of which The Common Room is a beautiful example.
Like Father Like Son, by Lester Magoogan, £150 for a bespoke print on framed wooden panel from original surreal line drawing
Lester’s line drawings are full of wit and insight and show his unique perspective on the world.

The beauty of Rachel’s work is how she finds art in the details that typically go unnoticed by the rest of the world. Currently preparing for her mid-residency exhibition at the prestigious California Institute of the Arts, she is heavily influenced by Pop Art.

Heart & Sold was founded in 2012 by Susie Moffat, and husband Paul. The initiative was inspired by the birth of their son Max, who was born with Down Syndrome in 2007.
Suzie explains: “With Max’s arrival we began a parental journey into unexpected territory, learning as we went, experiencing lows and highs, refocusing, and sometimes feeling adrift.
“Slowly our experiences with Max began to form a new perspective in my mind. With my background in art and design, and with some knowledge of Art Psychotherapy, I became increasingly fascinated by the creative nature of people with Down syndrome; their art was so unrestricted and startlingly different. I really wanted to know how many artists were out there, interpreting the world through this prism.
“The variety, power and amount of creativity I discovered was astonishing. It was art I knew the world needed to see — and that’s when Heart & Sold began to take shape.”
After a small pilot exhibition in 2012, Heart & Sold successfully developed a website to act as a platform for sales of limited edition prints and its stunning ChromaLuxe panels. Exhibitions in cities, including London and New York, followed, and the company has continued to go from strength to strength enjoying an international audience.
